- A natural Sharpening Stone (for regular sharpening of blade when scything)
- A Quick Set up Guide
Blade options:
The Styria 65cm blade is the most versatile options and is suitable for rough weeds, docks, bracken and young brambles (<1 year old). It will also cut grass and soft weeds, though for best results this requires peening.
The Fux Bush 40cm blade is a short, tough blades suitable for mowing tough weeds, bracken, bramble and occasional woody plants such as raspberry canes and young tree suckers. The Fux Bush blade is a good choice if you have a small area to control or you want to target individual stems. It’s short length means it puts less strain on the snath but care is still needed in use – this blade is stronger then your snath! Make sure the hafting angle is properly set and the clamp is tight before you start to mow and check it frequently as you work.
The set does not contain peening equipment. Blades used for mowing rough weeds, docks, bracken and brambles etc need less frequent peening as they do not need such a fine edge.
This set will get you started, then you can choose to use a file and a coarser stone to periodically re-shape the edge of the blade, invest in peening equipment or find someone to peen your blade.
Search for scythe blade peening service on the internet or find a local experienced scyther (try The Scythe Association if you don’t know anyone).
